Maraba Bourbon is named after the Maraba district in Rwanda where the Abahuzamugambi co-operative is located. It is an exemplary quality coffee harvested from one of the world’s oldest and finest varieties of tree, the Bourbon.
Seldom commercially grown today, the trees produce a lower yield crop compared to many of the modern varieties, but the taste is wonderfully smooth with a sweet fruity nature and rich full body. Although Rwanda has grown coffee commercially for many years, it has never before been produced for gourmet quality.
The Abahuzamugambi co-operative consists of smallholder farmers, some of whom are widows and orphans of the genocides. In 2001 Comic Relief returned to Rwanda to report on how they had been working with Avega, an organisation set up by widows of the genocides to provide support and practical assistance.
