BAKERS & LARNERS - COUNTRY OF THE MONTH

LEBANON

The winemaking legacy in Lebanon is one of the oldest in existence, and despite ongoing conflict disrupting the production of wine, Lebanon still produces around 600,000 cases of wine a year. The Winemakers often work under incredibly intense conditions that are both difficult and extremely dangerous, but the quality of the wine is unquestionable.

Vines for winemaking have been grown in Lebanon for over 6000 years, it wasn’t until the mid-19th century that notable winemakers started to settle in Lebanon with the creation of Chateau Ksara and the set-up of Domaine des Tourelles and then in1930 with the creation of Chateau Musar.

At Bakers & Larners of Holt, we are proud to stock the wines of Chateau Musar and have done for over 30 years. Owned by the Hochar family, founded by Gaston Hochar in 1930, the Hochar family’s philosophy of respect for the environment means that the 180 hectares of Musar vineyards are managed with minimal human interference and all the wines are made naturally. All the grapes are hand-harvested by local Bedouins between August and October.

In their youth, Chateau Musar Reds are dense and richly-textured, with intense ‘baked fruit’ characters: plums, damsons, cranberries, cherries, figs and dates. Over decades the wines acquire tawny hues and mellow notes. A good vintage of Chateau Musar will continue to develop for 50 years or more!
